Being English, I decided long ago to concentrate on the English breeds. This decision led me to the Sussex and Orpington breeds and I plan to add others over the next year or so. Watch this space as my flock grows…!
Our Speckled Sussex are gorgeous birds, predominantly non-hatchery. We believe you can really tell the difference. They are the most agreeable, intelligent birds I have. There will be a limited supply of hatching eggs available in 2010, but I will be hatching quantities of eggs myself to improve and expand my flock. Birds that do not make the grade I require – in line with the American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection – will be sold as layers. Excess birds will be sold as day-olds and older.
The Speckled Sussex have recently been joined by a pair of Light Sussex. A very rare breed in this country – while available ten-a-penny in the UK! – we will be using three prominent bloodlines to develop our own birds, with an emphasis on the APA standard.
The Buff Orpingtons are just gorgeous. They are just juveniles right now, but already have the trademark golden plumage and friendly dispositions. They are from show-winning stock and we can’t wait to see how they develop. Blue, Black and Splash Orpingtons from renowned lines have also joined our flock and we will be breeding them for quality and type. Occasionally, there may be non-breeding birds available for sale, who do not quite make the grade for the standard we are pursuing, but who will be excellent layers nonetheless.
We are excited to have been given a pair of very rare Colored Dorkings by a wonderful, generous man. These birds are stunning, and currently have pride of place in our household as living, breathing lawn ornaments. We just love to watch them. We will be working with this pair to hatch and increase our flock, hopefully to bring some truly top quality rare-breed birds into more backyards.
Our brooders are alive with the sound of peeping – Silver Grey and Red Dorkings! These are definitely not hatchery standard birds, they came from a private flock and the quality speaks for itself. Photographs to follow.
We also love to hatch our own eggs as we think the home-hatched ones are so much friendlier! In 2010, we may have some day-olds available for sale, straight run. Contact us for breeds and availability!
